How to Add a Watermark to Photos Before You Post

How to add a watermark or logo to your photos and videos. Where to place it, what size and opacity to use and how to add it to every post.

To add a watermark to a photo, place your logo or name over the image as a small, partly transparent mark, then export a copy. You can do it photo by photo in an image editor, or let sona.to add it to every photo and video when a post is published. This guide covers both, with the settings that keep a watermark visible without spoiling the picture.

Prepare your logo

Use a PNG with a transparent background, so only the logo shows and not a white box around it. Keep a light version for dark photos and a dark version for light ones, or a version with a thin outline that reads on both. A simple mark works better than a full logo with small text, which becomes unreadable once it is shrunk.

Where to place a watermark

A corner is the usual choice: it marks the photo without covering the subject. Leave a margin from the edge, because some networks crop the edges in feeds and previews. Avoid the bottom right of vertical videos, where most apps show their own buttons.

If you post the same photo in several formats, check the placement on the narrowest one. A square crop of a landscape photo can cut a logo placed too close to the side.

Size and opacity

The watermark should be readable but should not be the first thing people see. Size it relative to the shorter side of the image, so it looks the same on a portrait photo and a landscape one. Lower the opacity until the photo shows through the logo; a fully opaque logo draws the eye away from the picture.

How to add a watermark to one photo

In any photo editor: open the photo, add your logo as a new layer, move it to the corner you chose, adjust size and opacity, then export a copy. Keep the original without the mark. In sona.to, the image editor in the media library works on a copy of the file in the same way.

Add a watermark to every post automatically

Placing a logo by hand on every photo is the step that gets skipped on busy days. The watermark feature in sona.to does it when the post is published:

Set the team watermark once. Upload your logo (PNG, JPG or WebP), pick one of nine positions and set size, opacity and margin while a preview shows the result on landscape, portrait and square photos.

Choose photos, videos or both. The logo is added to the images and videos of each post on its way out.

Turn it on per channel. Switch the watermark on or off for each channel, or give one channel its own logo and placement, for example a different logo for each brand you manage.

Your original file in the library is never changed: the mark is added to the copy that is published.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a watermark to videos?

Yes. Turn on Videos in the watermark settings and the logo is added to videos as well as photos.

Does the watermark work on TikTok?

No. TikTok does not allow logos on media, so TikTok channels are left out. GIFs are also posted without the logo.

Can I watermark photos for free?

Any photo editor can add a watermark by hand. To prepare photos before posting, the free image resizer and EXIF remover resize your pictures and remove their hidden camera and location data.
