1080 pixels wide. The height can be anything from 566 pixels (landscape, 1.91:1) to 1440 pixels (portrait, 3:4). A wider photo is reduced to 1080 pixels.

Can a carousel mix square and portrait photos?

No. The shape you choose applies to every photo and video in the post. A carousel holds up to 20.

What size is an Instagram story?

1440 x 2560 pixels, a 9:16 shape, from Meta's guide for ads. Keep text and logos out of the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% on each side.

What Instagram does with your photo

If your photo is between 320 and 1080 pixels wide and its shape is between landscape 1.91:1 and portrait 3:4, Instagram keeps it as it is. A smaller photo is enlarged to 320 pixels wide and a larger one is reduced to 1080. Any other shape gets cropped.
