Character counter with the limit of each network

Count characters, words, sentences and lines, see the bytes and the reading time, and check your text against the limit of each social network.

Type or paste your text and the counts update as you write. Select part of it to count only that part. Each social network counts in its own way, so the network list uses the rule of each one. Everything happens in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Google does not limit titles or meta descriptions by characters. It cuts them to fit the screen. See where yours is cut in the SERP Preview.

How characters are counted

A character is what you see as one: a letter, a space, a punctuation mark or an emoji. An accented letter or an emoji made of several Unicode code points still counts as 1. A line break counts as 1. The count without spaces leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.

Why social networks count differently

X counts each link as 23 characters, and counts emoji and characters such as Japanese, Chinese or Korean as 2. Threads counts an emoji as its size in bytes. TikTok counts most emoji as 2. Mastodon counts each link as 23. The list shows each network with its own count, so a text can fit on one and not on another.

Bytes and text messages

Bytes are counted in UTF-8, the encoding used by web pages and most forms. A Latin letter takes 1 byte, an accented letter 2, most Japanese, Chinese and Korean characters 3 and most emoji 4. A text message holds 160 characters when every character is in the basic SMS set, and 70 when one is not, such as an emoji. A longer text is sent in parts of 153 or 67.

Reading time

Reading time uses 238 words a minute and reading aloud 183, the averages for adults found by Marc Brysbaert in a 2019 review of reading studies. Japanese, Chinese and Thai are written without spaces between words, so the browser works out the words and the count is an estimate. Reading time is not shown for them.

Nothing leaves your browser

The text is counted on your own device. Nothing you type is sent to sona.to, stored or logged. There is no account and no sign in.
